You do not fly into “Coron Airport.” You fly into Busuanga (USU) on the north of the island, then van 30–45 minutes to Coron town. In 2026 those turboprops leave Clark or Cebu, not NAIA. From El Nido, the fast ferry is still the backpacker default at about 3.5–4 hours.
This guide covers the air map after the March 2026 turboprop shift, the airport van into town, the slow Manila ferry option, and how Coron links to El Nido for a dual-base Palawan trip. Operator names and fares move — last checked 3 September 2026; confirm live before you buy.
Where you actually land: Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU), Busuanga Island
Coron town sits on Busuanga Island in the Calamian group. The commercial runway is Francisco B. Reyes Airport, code USU, often labeled Busuanga. It is not in Coron town proper. Landing here and assuming you can walk to Kayangan Lake is the classic first-timer mistake.
After immigration-free domestic arrival (or after connecting from an international hub), you exit into a small terminal ecosystem: shared vans, private transfers, SIM sellers, and the usual post-flight haze. Your job is simple: get on a van toward Coron town and tell them a neighborhood, not just “the island.”
2026 flight map: Clark and Cebu, not NAIA turboprops
Same story as El Nido’s Lio hop: turboprop operations moved off NAIA from 29 March 2026. Direct everyday seats into USU are planned primarily from Clark International (CRK) and Cebu (CEB), with schedules that still wobble by season. Do not build an itinerary on a remembered “Manila morning flight to Coron” from pre-2026 blogs without re-checking the airline app. The El Nido version of this map is in How to get to El Nido in 2026.
Manila hotel → Clark (2–3 hours) → USU (~1 hour)
From Makati, Manila Bay, or Quezon City, treat Clark as a separate mission:
- Coach (e.g. Genesis P2P) or private van to CRK — budget 2–3 hours, more in bad traffic.
- Domestic turboprop CRK → USU — typically around an hour airborne.
- Van USU → Coron town — 30–45 minutes.
Overnight near Clark before an early departure is the stress-free version. Trying to clear NAIA international arrival, cross to Clark, and catch the same-day USU flight is how people miss boats and dinners.
Via Cebu (often simpler if you are already in the Visayas)
If your trip already includes Cebu, Moalboal, or a CEB international arrival, Cebu → Busuanga can be cleaner than backtracking through Manila. It is also a useful escape hatch when Clark seats are ugly. Confirm aircraft type and baggage rules; turboprop holds are not widebody holds.
Airport van to Coron town (30–45 min; shared vans meet flights)
Shared vans meet most arriving flights. Drivers call destinations; listen for Coron / Coron town. Ride time is usually 30–45 minutes depending on drops and traffic through the island road. Private transfers cost more and help if you have dive gear or a tight ferry connection.
What to tell the driver: Busuanga Rd / Barangay 5
Do not say only “hostel.” Give a street or barangay:
- Outpost Coron is on Busuanga Road, Barangay 5 — town-edge with rooftop pool views back toward the islands.
- Central plaza / bay-adjacent hostels: say Coron town proper or the street on your booking.
- Quieter jungle or out-of-town stays: have the exact sitio ready; some vans will not go door-to-door without a top-up.
Pay attention on the descent into town so you do not hop off at an early resort cluster by accident. When in doubt, stay seated until the driver confirms your pin.
Overnight ferry from Manila — only if you like 13–15 hour boats
A Manila overnight ferry (2GO is the name travelers usually meet — confirm the sailing and brand when you book) still exists as a budget / scenic option for travelers who hate short hops or love berths. Expect roughly 13–15 hours at sea, port timing that eats a calendar day, and motion that is not for everyone. It is valid; it is not the default 2026 hostel recommendation unless you specifically want the boat experience or flights are impossible.
El Nido → Coron fast ferry (3.5–4 hours) vs flying the short hop
For backpackers linking both bases, the El Nido–Coron fast ferry remains the spine: about 3.5–4 hours on a good day. Operators rotate (Montenegro, Phimal, and others appear in traveler reports — confirm the name on your ticket). Weather cancels sailings; build a buffer before any international flight home.
Ferry when: you want both islands, one bag, and a story. Sit on deck if you can; bring motion tablets if you need them.
Fly the short hop when: seas are rough, you are short on days, or ferry inventory is sold out. Air links between the two airports exist on some dates but are not always cheaper or simpler than the boat once you count vans both ends — compare total door-to-door time, not ticket stickers alone.
Arrive by afternoon ferry and you can still climb Mt. Tapyas for sunset or soak at Maquinit Hot Spring — just do not stack a full Super Ultimate lake day on the same afternoon you stepped off the gangway. Order of islands: El Nido vs Coron.
First 24 hours in Coron: Super Ultimate vs beach day, Maquinit, Mt. Tapyas
Coron rewards a slightly different pacing than El Nido:
- Active lake / lagoon / wreck day: Outpost’s Super Ultimate hits Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake, Twin Lagoon, CYC Beach, Smith Beach, Skeleton Wreck, and Coral Garden energy in one long day (confirm the live stop list on the tour page). Listed at ₱2,200 on our Coron tours page — confirm when booking.
- Beach / sandbar day: Island Escapade leans Coco Beach, Ditaytayan sandbar, and Malcapuya Island — listed at ₱1,900 on the same page; confirm when booking.
- Land evening: Mt. Tapyas stairs for bay views; Maquinit Hot Spring after dark if you want warm saltwater sore-muscle therapy.
Boats typically leave 9 AM. Land, sleep, boat — same rule as El Nido. Browse Coron island hopping tours and Stay once your USU seat or ferry ticket is real.
If El Nido is next (or previous)
Coron first makes sense when you found a clean Clark/Cebu → USU fare or you care more about lakes and wrecks than lagoon postcards. El Nido first makes sense when Lio seats or the classic Tour A itch come first. Either direction, the ferry ties the circuit; flying out the second airport avoids backtracking.
Soft next steps: lock the pillow on Stay, then hold the boat on the Coron tours page.
FAQs
Is there a direct flight from NAIA to Coron in 2026?
Not as the everyday turboprop pattern travelers remembered. After 29 March 2026, plan Clark or Cebu → Busuanga (USU) and re-check airlines the week you book. Last checked 3 September 2026.
How much is the airport van and how long does it take?
Shared vans commonly take 30–45 minutes into Coron town. Exact pesos swing with fuel, drops, and whether you go private — confirm the posted rate at the terminal rather than trusting an old blog number. Agree the destination (e.g. Busuanga Rd / Barangay 5) before you load bags.
Should I book the El Nido–Coron ferry before I fly?
In peak months (roughly November–April dry-season demand), yes — book ahead once your flight dates are firm. In quieter weeks you can sometimes buy closer to departure, but weather still cancels sailings. Never leave zero buffer before an international departure.
Can I land at USU and do Kayangan Lake the same day?
Only if you land early, clear the van fast, and join a tour that still has space — and even then you will feel rushed. Standard hostel boats leave 9 AM. Healthier plan: arrive, Mt. Tapyas or Maquinit, sleep, full lake day tomorrow.
